You’ve heard it all before.
Drink water. Eat your fiber. Get your protein.
Take your supplements. Avoid “toxins.”
Move your body. Meditate. Stretch.
But let me ask you this—
When was the last time you did something just because it made you laugh?
When was the last time joy—real, body-deep, gut-giggling joy—was part of your healing protocol?
In a world obsessed with “clean eating” and “clean living,” joy gets left behind.
But here’s the truth:
Joy is a nutrient. A regulator. A balm. A damn-near-miracle drug.
And if your wellness routine doesn’t make room for pleasure, play, and fun?
It’s not liberation—it’s just another form of control dressed up in activewear.
Fun Isn’t a Distraction—It’s a Biological Reset
Let’s get nerdy for a second. When you laugh, your body releases:
Dopamine (the feel-good, motivation molecule)
Endorphins (natural painkillers)
Oxytocin (connection and trust)
Serotonin (mood regulation)
This hormonal cocktail is not just for vibes.
It lowers cortisol (your stress hormone), boosts your immune system, improves digestion, and even regulates blood sugar.
So yes, belly laughs literally help you poop better. Science.
But Fun Feels Frivolous, Right?
That’s because we’ve been colonized out of our pleasure.
Capitalism tells us fun is earned, not necessary.
Diet culture tells us joy is a reward, not a right.
Patriarchy tells us rest is lazy, indulgence is weakness, and play is for children.
But we come from cultures that danced while cooking, sang while grinding grain, turned mealtime into ceremony, and made healing communal.
Your joy is sacred.
Your laughter is a survival skill.
Signs You Might Be Joy Deficient
If you're wondering whether joy has left the chat, ask yourself:
Do your healing routines feel more like chores than care?
Do you resist rest because it feels unproductive?
Have you forgotten what “fun” even means to you?
Are your meals all about macros and none about magic?
Does movement feel like punishment, not pleasure?
If so, you’re not broken. You’re just overdue for a joy infusion.
Healing Doesn’t Have to Hurt
What if healing felt like humming your favorite song while chopping onions?
What if your daily walk was a dance break?
What if your bedtime routine included giggling at memes with your best friend?
Joy doesn’t mean you’re avoiding the hard stuff.
It just means you’re building the capacity to face it with more resilience.
Joyful people aren’t delusional.
They’re regulated.
They’re resourced.
They’re ready to show up for life and liberation.
Microdosing Joy: How to Start Today
Here’s your prescription:
🌀 5 minutes of play — with a pet, a playlist, or a coloring book.
🌀 1 joyful movement — skip, bounce, stretch, twerk, or sway.
🌀 Something funny — stand-up, memes, your own awkward selfies.
🌀 Something beautiful — light a candle, wear something soft, step into sunlight.
🌀 Something nostalgic — bring back a childhood snack or song.
You don’t have to overhaul your life.
Start small. Start joyful. Start now.
Joy Is the Point
Fun isn’t extra.
It’s not a reward.
It’s not childish.
It’s sacred.
It’s protective.
It’s medicine.
So if no one’s told you today: You deserve to enjoy your life while you heal.
Not after. Not when you hit a goal weight or a savings target.
Now. As you are.

Hi, Dalia !! Catharine Clarenbach here. I’m going to be leading a six-week spiritual deepening series on joy very soon. I’d love to use some of your words with attribution. I’ve found that Black feminist and womanist teachers are leading me steadily toward the necessity of joy, and you are among them!
I hope you are well. I’d love to connect sometime !
